Hi Learners and Lovers

Your studying program starts here!

HOW TO THINK ABOUT LANGUAGES

What is more important:

a) Grammar                c) Live in the USA           e) Listening

b) A good English course       d) Vocabulary

Students normally go to traditional schools to learn English but never do. They learn numbers, colours, how to say ‘how are you’etc.. Are they fluent in English?

In your first lesson, I will teach you conversations we use in real life.

But how

Smile and breathe

When you speak English, smiling will make you feel more positive.

Memorize examples with vocabulary

Don’t just memorize lists of words. Make the example phrases as memorable as possible with a funny story or use something related to your life to help you.

Listen to learn

When listening to English movies, series, YouTube videos etc., pay attention to what you hear. Write down new phrases, ask your teacher about any that you don’t understand.  Learning from the real world will make your English more relevant and natural than learning from a textbook.

Exercise your mouth muscles

English probably uses some sounds that you don’t have in your first language. To make these sounds correctly, you need to develop the muscles in your mouth by exercising them. When you practice alone, you will find it easier to speak clearly in a normal conversation.

Copy a native speaker

You can learn a lot from copying the way a native speaker speaks.  Practice saying words exactly how they sound. Pay attention to the sound of each syllable and which words are stressed.

USEFUL WORDS…

CAN I HAVE THAT…?      YES, I’LL TAKE THAT

HOW MUCH IS THAT?   DO YOU TAKE CREDIT CARD?    THAT’S ALRIGHT; I’LL PAY CASH

HOW CAN I HELP YOU?     THANK YOU AND HAVE A NICE DAY.

YOU TOO!

LET’S TRY USING THE INFORMATION IN THIS CLASS?

Situation 1

TIME TO PRACTICE YOUR LISTENING NOW. TAKE NOTES ON THE PHRASES YOU LISTEN TO. COPY THE PRONUNCIATION AND NOTICE THE STRESS ON EACH WORD.

I hope you follow the recommendations and practice English every day. 2 hours every day are sufficient. Remember, when you go to college you study more hours than that. To be a competent speaker you will have to study hard every day.

Is it a lot of work or is it fun?

Your answer will determine how fast you will learn and how good you will get.

HOMEWORK

Play the video again and write down 3 phrases (or more if you like). Notice the stress. Practice speaking them naturally and share with your teacher next class.

After teaching in Brazil for almost 10 years, I’ve noticed students coming from traditional schools usually can’t speak correctly or understand English well — especially if there are expressions or phrasal verbs involved.

The philosophy in this lesson will help you a lot if you practice every day.

Good Luck
